The Mega-Helmet

Egide - The Mega Helmet. The Ultimate Helmet.

For skiing, cycling, or riding, Egide Helmets combine superlative and usually contradictory qualities: brilliantly designed, extremely lightweight, incredibly comfortable, highly protective, and resilient.

Before Egide, athletes had to compromise. Now they can have it all, and all they need to choose is their model and preferred color.

Why choose EGIDE?

It all started with a simple observation:

"There was always something slightly wrong with urban cycle helmets and riding hats. If the helmet had a good design, then it wasn't comfortable. If it was comfortable, then it wasn't light enough. If it was light, then it didn't give enough protection and wasn't very hard-wearing.

So, we decided to create cycle helmets and riding hats which are (almost) perfect, and which manage to combine all these elements: we call them mega-helmets" explain Etienne-Marie de Boissieu and Benoît Denis who created the EGIDE brand in 2014.

Under the aegis of the Gods

In Greek mythology, an égide (French) or aegis is a magical shield, carried by the gods, particularly Zeus and Athena. It provides exceptional protection aimed to guarantee the safety of the person who bears it; but it is also a work of art in its own right. Homer describes it as "precious, immutable and immortal" (ἰγίδ᾽ ἐρίτιμον ἀγήρων ἀθανάτην τε).

Part of its powers comes from the material which coats it, the skin of a sacred goat, Amalthea. EGIDE, inspired by the figure of Athena, the goddess of war, wisdom, artists and craftsmen, advocates these functional and aesthetic origins, based on the value of the material used.

Timeless beauty

EGIDE's ambition is to make urban cycle helmets and riding helmets which are true fashion accessories. Over and above their functional purpose, they are intended to add a touch of elegance to your urban and sporting activities

With its combination of "vintage" aesthetics and "high-tech", the EGIDE helmet is in keeping with the times and also manages to be timeless, by transcending passing trends. Inspired by helmets from various eras and by several martial and sporting activities, its design is based on intricate and complex workmanship but ultimately leads to an object of the greatest simplicity; "the supreme sophistication" cited by Leonardo de Vinci. We can state, without any hesitation, that EGIDE helmets are among the most accomplished on the market, due both to their design and the quality of their finishing touches.

Exceptional quality

This timeless line is based on the proven know-how of specialist craftsmen in the helmet and luxury accessories sector. Designed in Paris, EGIDE helmets are manufactured in Nantes and Cholet.

The completion of the shell is the result of one of the strictest manufacturing processes in the world, in terms of safety; the outer coating and inner lining, which are made entirely by hand for each helmet, offer an irreproachable finished quality. EGIDE is, in addition, the only brand that offers a very large range of high-quality materials for helmets, both those which have been around for thousands of years (leather, linen,...), and those which are more modern and high-tech (carbon, Kevlar,...).

EGIDE, much more than a brand: a veritable talisman

From its mythological and warrior origins, EGIDE has kept the safety requirements but has also maintained a certain sense of panache.

An EGIDE helmet is not just any old accessory. It is a signature object which expresses the identity of the person wearing it. It was designed to transform an everyday object into a knightly helmet. In other words, a helmet for modern-day heroes and heroines.

Manufacturing-

No less than ten stages are involved in the manufacture of EGIDE helmets, whether made from leather or high-tech materials, and whether for cycling, skiing, or horse-riding. Each of these stages is carried out by hand, in Nantes and Cholet.

Stage 1: Selection and treatment of the leather

The full-grain leathers for EGIDE helmets are chosen from the most renowned tanneries. They are then treated as a mass, which ensures that they will withstand the extremes of rain, UV rays and surface aggressions.

Stage 2: Carbon / Kevlar / Linen: selection and treatment

EGIDE has selected carbon, Kevlar and linen as its high-tech materials of choice. Used in the aeronautical industry, for bullet-proof vests and other protective coatings, these materials ensure that the helmets are robust, light and safe. The surface is then covered with an anti-scratch varnish.

Stage 3: Leather-cutting

At the next stage of manufacture: the leathers are cut by hand, to ensure that only those parts which contain no imperfections are identified and selected for use by the skilled leather craftsman.

Stage 4: Carbone / Kevlar / Linen: The cutting

Like for leather, the high-tech materials are cut by hand, but this time using a die-cutting punch, and in accordance with strict draping plans. The craftsman's experienced eye ensures that there are no defects in the pieces which are chosen.

Stage 5: Leather-stitching

The seams and the stitching are done by hand, using a special thread, which is chosen for its high resistance to rain, UV rays and surface abrasions.

Stage 6: Bonding and fitting

After preparing the surfaces, adhesive is applied to the crown and the leather is then fitted on the crown. It then needs to be inspected, once dry.

Stage 7: Assembly

The component parts added at this stage are each individually inspected and weighed. The chin-strap and small air-holes are then set, the protective foam is glued on and the visor installed.

Stage 8: Branding

The helmet and chin-strap are hot-stamped with the EGIDE logo, which completes the manufacture of this meticulous finishing process.

Stage 9: Certification and compliance

Once the manufacture is completed, each helmet is subjected to the European standards: shock-absorption, chin-strap retention and compression tests are performed,... These tests are carried out at extreme temperatures (from -20° to +50°). Random follow-up tests are carried out in collaboration with an accredited French laboratory.

Stage 10: Inspection / Shipping

Last stage: each helmet is inspected one final time. All the helmets are numbered so that each product can be traced. We then carefully pack and deliver them, together with an owner's guidebook, in a protective, fabric bag.
